Weekend Quick Cryptic 50 - How Many? Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's my turn.
You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTT.

Before looking at the answers, if you would like some additional help, click the label below.

Hints...

Some hints and tips:
  • There is a clue in the title which is reflected in some of the across answers
  • The last two answers combined are a question to which I hope the answer is "Yes".
  • The Cardinal at 1A is not a member of the clergy

And click on this label to get the solution.

  1. Thanks John. Good puzzle that made 2 Glaswegian solvers very happy.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. Hmm. Maybe time I did a Scottish themed crossword... I'm, in origina, a Glaswegian too.

  2. Lovely as usual, and even got the clue for the meet (I think I’ve been to the George - is it the Green King pub with the courtyard outside down a narrow street?)

Only query was 2dn Fuzz - assuming it’s a double definition?

    1. Yes it is.... "A buzzing or distorted sound, especially one deliberately produced as an effect on an electric guitar.", say the dictionary.

Not properly timed, but around 40 minutes for me. I made good progress until just three clues remained when, as often is the case, my solving skills (such as they are) just upped and left. My LOI was FACTIONS, which I got from the definition only. I don't understand how it relates to 'strong measures', I'm afraid.
Well done on reaching 50 not out. Let's hope you go on and turn it into a century.
I would quite liked to have joined you for a beer or two today, but I really don't like cities and very rarely venture voluntarily into London or any other for that matter. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoyed the get-together.

    1. Strong is “F” and measures are “actions”. The former is “strong/loud” as in the Italian musical term “forte”.

Very nice puzzle, all done in about 13 minutes so very slightly tougher for me than some of the Saturday Specials. I spotted the message in the first 4 across clues post completion - congratulations and many thanks to you, Phil J and Sawbill!

Only small hesitation was over 2D Fuzz; not a musical term I know but there are not that many words going F-Z- with the side meaning of Blur. What is the guitar connection?

    Thanks again, Cedric

Fuzz was obvious but I had to consult the dictionary

  7. Enjoyed the puzzle but was stuck on my last clue, 9a. The answer which I finally got was a lot simpler than I was thinking.
