Weekend Quick Cryptic 52 - Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes (now at its new home!) contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's Sawbill's turn.

You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTTYou can find an index to the complete series of crosswords here.

Before looking at the answers, if you would like some additional help, click the label below.

Hints...

Some hints and tips:
  • The old airline ceased trading in 1991. It was the first airline to fly worldwide and pioneered numerous innovations of the modern airline industry, such as jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems
  • The channel is a narrow, natural strait and internationally significant waterway in north-western Turkey

I liked this puzzle, which took me 12 minutes, bang on par for the Saturday Specials. Some very nice clues, a few only fully parsed after entering them (eg Everybody, Starter).

Took a time to twig that Iberia could also mean Portuguese - so often it is "appropriated" by the Spanish.

Many thanks Sawbill for both puzzle and blog.
