Weekend Quick Cryptic 64 - Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's Phil's turn.

You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTTYou can find an index to the complete series of crosswords here.

Before looking at the answers, if you would like some additional help, click the label below.

  1. Very enjoyable clues-especially TEDIOUSLY and STUNTWOMAN. I guessed packet was SHIP but had to work through builder, maker, worker etc before I got to WRIGHT! Thanks for good test.

  5. Very enjoyable - main hold up was 1ac “Shipwright” which I eventfully got after an alphabet trawl - hadn’t heard of the packet steamer before.

Have to admit, I thought the clue for 9ac was incorrect at first - I initially parsed it as fun = frivolity, and just = fair, so I couldn’t work out how the “not” came into it. Then, I shifted a few letters across and it became clear 😀.

Liked 15ac “Oomph”, 19dn “Gloom” amd 18ac “Stag Night”

    Thanks as usual!

    1. Thank you … I have always wanted to visit St P. (Surprising, given I have a Russian born wife).

    2. Definitely on the wavelength with 1a first in.
Last in was 10a where I quickly got the LY but was slow to see the anagram of outside.
      COD to 15a.
      Thanks to Sawbill.

    3. I thought 1a would be the most difficult. I live and learn.

  10. A very nice puzzle which took me 12 minutes - bang on my par for the Saturday Specials. How the three of you maintain such a consistent standard I do not know.

Only issue was with 9A where the clue I read had "Not just after a bit of fun ..." not frivolity. Very odd, and threw me at first with fun being in both clue and answer. Did no-one else see this wording?

St Petersburg is a fabulous city, well worth visiting. Though sadly not now I suspect.

Many thanks Sawbill for a very classy puzzle.

    1. Thanks Cedric for your kind words. Fun should be Frivolity in that clue. Sorry about that!

    2. Sorry about the problem with the crossword.info version. My final edit of "fun" to "frivolity" didn't update correctly due to a bug in Crossword Compiler. Now fixed for further solvers.

  11. Just got round to trying this. Very enjoyable and some fun clues. 1a the most tricky until I had all the checkers. I think a little red wine with supper helped my mental fluidity this evening... Really liked 7d Freight Train - could have been train------- until I saw the numbering for the letters in the answer. My printout had a typo on the clue numbers: 8a was really 6a but sailed over that. Many thanks for setting us a good weekend puzzle; we are all grateful for all your efforts - Andrew-Turner

  12. Thanks Andrew. I found FREIGHT TRAIN the most difficult to clue.
