Weekend Quick Cryptic 81 - Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's Sawbill's turn.

You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTTYou can find an index to the complete series of crosswords here.

Before looking at the answers, if you would like some additional help, click the label below.

Hints and tips...

Some hints and tips:
  • 13A is not where you train
  • 19A it's Sow the noun not the verb
  • 3D is a homophone of "kids"
And click on this label to get the solution.

  1. Finished the QC early so decided to try this a day early...Really liked 18a surface - made me smile. Would have been quicker but for fat fingering nIAve which slowed up Into. Missed the hidden 7d but entered correctly anyway. Also liked 1a for the different pronunciation (rather like 5a in the QC). Lots of other nice surfaces eg 5d. So lots to enjoy. Thanks for doing these - I know I speak for many QC'ers.

    1. Thanks Andrew. I am always fascinated to see the clues that people like the most.

  2. NEW JERSEY and INTO were favourites, also TRAILING and STREET. DEWATER and MERSEYSIDE were the hardest and took the longest time. I couldn't see "over" as an anagram indicator and I was misled looking for the letters n and w in the answer, instead of a northwest location. Lots of fun, thanks!

  3. Thank you. NEW JERSEY is obviously popular. I originally had 'Setter barking in road' for STREET but I had too many anagrams so had to change it.

Very nice puzzle, all done in 9 minutes though not without a few pauses for considered thought. Took me time to work out Street (excellent clue, very "clean" surface, and I was well misled at first into wondering how a reference to acorns might be got into the answer), and then my LOI Merseyside, where I was looking for an anagram of "My desire is" and could not work out why I could only fit one I into the answer - or what the south east was doing for that matter. Finally the Penny dropped ....

Two other clues caused minor hold-ups on the way: Siding because I wondered if the answer could be that straightforward, with no wordplay, and Dewater, which I wasn't sure meant drain, or even was a word at all. But it had to be.

Many thanks Sawbill for another classy puzzle.

  5. Thanks Cedric. With SIDING I think that it depends if you think of 'going to the gym' before 'railways'. Ironically, PB in his clue-writing competition liked my clue for EXERCISE BIKE yesterday which was 'Train sat here not moving forward'.

  6. Very enjoyable thanks John and all done after breakfast this morning.
I tried to parse 13a as a double definition and decided that ‘not running’ could be someone siding with another candidate in an election. Trying to be too clever!
I enjoyed solving NIGHTS and liked PLANT, HERB and ASTERN. All PDM clues.
Thanks again for the pleasure you bring.

  7. Thanks Ian. I wish I had thought of your idea for 'not running' as well.

  8. Thanks vm, Sawbill. Great Xword, about the right level of difficulty. Got going in the SE then finished fairly smoothly apart from LOsI NAIVE and INTO which required some thought. Liked TRAILING, SIDING, MARKETING, STREET, MERSEYSIDE, among others.

    1. Thanks Countrywoman. I was worried that TRAILING was a bit difficult. Just goes to show.

  9. An enjoyable QC that was pitched at a nice level (well - compared to some in the main paper recently). Wasn’t sure about “dewater” as a word, but it couldn’t be anything else, and it took a while to think of the double definition for 13ac “siding” (I’m presuming “siding” up to someone). I enjoyed 20ac “Into” which was clever and the homage to Oink at 19ac.

    Thanks as usual!

  10. Ignore my comment on “siding” above - think I’m getting confused with sidling up to someone.

  11. Thanks James. I knew DEWATER from before my retirement. We used to dewater quarries etc. It's probably not used by everyone.

  12. Please don't add any water to my whisky- I wouldn't have any idea how to DEWATER it without ruining the taste!

    1. I am reminded of my Grandfather who, when asked how he liked his whisky said "50:50 whisky and water... and don't be sparing with the water".

  13. Lots to enjoy here, with 19a a particular favourite. Held up at the end by settling on the wrong sort of fencing. Nice big groan when it finally came to me. Good one!

I was INTO your great surfaces. Right up my STREET. I particularly enjoyed the TAXI ride at 9A and 5D EVASIVE. My favourite though was 7D STORES for its surface and that the answer was on the same theme as the clue.

19A made me smile for its misdirection

NHO DEWATER and read it as DEW-WATER. I thought that might be something you get in DEWPONDS which we used to see a lot on childhood trips to Derbyshire. Always good to learn new stuff.

    Time: 1 cup of coffee

Thanks Sawbill for a great puzzle and John for the blog.
