ReplyDeleteEMULATE (COD) made me smile. Also liked FUMES, CROSS BENCHER, PLAINTIFF, THREE. Had to start at the bottom with OPUS and work my way steadily up.

DeleteExcellent puzzle, all done in a faster-than-usual 8 minutes. A small hesitation over Nature = Make up, but the first definition and the checkers were clear enough. Very much enjoyed CROSSBENCHER and AFT, two lovely clues of very differing length! Many thanks Sawbill for another most enjoyable challenge.

DeleteStarted with SPARSER and then generally worked clockwise to finish with 1a and 1d - both with big appreciative groans. Almost every clue put up at least some resistance - especially the big chain - needed all the checkers for the mist to clear. Lovely stuff.
