9 minutes for this excellent puzzle, helped by getting RETURN TICKETS straight away. Most unlike me to "see" a cryptic clue just like that, especially with no checkers, and slightly nervous about it as there was of course no wordplay to corroborate the guess. But in it went and it unlocked the top half of the grid for a smooth solve. Lots to like, especially KESTREL and EL SALVADOR where the first part of the answer, -L, had me scratching my head until the light dawned, and AMNESIA for the excellent surface. EROTICA LOI. Many thanks Sawbill for another classy crossword.

  2. Lovely stuff, thanks Sawbill. Had to hop around the grid a bit to get going but the wavelength arrived before halfway. Ended up with the epic story giving the last checker for the period - turns out I had heard of it I just coudn't scramble the anagrist. The direction was particularly well hidden in the letters too I thought.

Very odd. I posted a comment here yesterday (Saturday) on completing the puzzle, it was published, I saw it and it has now gone. And this is not the first time - perhaps John can find it in some delete file?

Anyway, I enjoyed this, and finished it in (from memory now) about 9 minutes, much helped by getting 1A straight off the bat - most unusual for me for a cryptic clue. That opened up the top part of the grid and I was away to the races. Great puzzle, much enjoyed, hold-up over El Salvador (a two letter word at the start going -L did not look promising!) What with them and the Mexicans, quite the central American duo. Many thanks Sawbill

    1. Thanks Cedric. I hoped that there were enough crossers to make RETURN TICKETS not too hard for those who didn’t see it.

  5. Fun puzzle. A steady solve as I thought of RETURN TICKETS straight away, but needed a hint as couldn’t spell TRIASSIC. Should have thought of Jurassic.
Liked EGRESS, GRIT, ILIAD, ISAAC, among others.
Are MEXICANS North? And is an ALLEY wide enough for a thoroughfare?
    Many thanks, Sawbill and John.

    1. I think Mexico is considered part of North America. After all t is north of Central America! Up to a few years ago there was the North American Free Trade Pact (NAFTA) between Canada, US and Mexico.

  6. What a beauty! Like Cedric I spotted 1a instantly but didnt write it in until I had 3&4d. But the real jewel in the crown for me was 2d, mild groan at first that not only am I supposed to know obscure musical instruments I am supposed to know the names of the parts of them. When the penny dropped my wife thought I was having a choking fit. Will go into the all time greats list.
    Thanks Sawbill & John.

  10. Excellent puzzle that took a bit of thinking. At first pass I thought you'd dialled up the difficulty significantly, but it just needed a little more care to unravel some of the more intricate clues. I particularly enjoyed 1ac "Return Tickets" (which I didn't spot immediately), 9ac "Triassic" and 2dn "Earplugs". Great stuff.

  11. Late to this as I am relaxing on holiday but just wanted to say thank you for this lovely puzzle.
Only hold up was TAIL which required a 1 second alphabet trawl as luckily I began at A.
Failed to parse EGRESS which was nicely constructed and LIPS was my COD.
