Sawbill channelling his inner Cheeko methinks here. WALDORF (took for ever), MOWS (M.O. for way of working quite the ask) and WATSON the main three to hold me up, but all round quite the challenge, which took me 14:44.

Many thanks Sawbill for the workout!

  3. From Countrywoman. Enjoyable puzzle. Felt a bit silly to have taken so much time about my LOI CYCLES. Mistakenly biffed doubtful Mown instead of MOWS.
COD WATSON. No problem with WALDORF, liked LOCAL, ON A ROLL and AMOUNT. Been to Croatia, so no problem with SPLIT. LEARN was clever.
    Thanks vm, Sawbill and John.

  4. Enjoyed all the humour in this. Stumped by 19a and plumped for Mews (as a 'way') so a DNF. Nice way to spend a cuppa this afternoon. Many thanks!

Enjoyed this, but don't understand either definition for owners. Is the first one "those who own up"? No idea on the second.
    Thanks

    1. Thanks Paggers. Yes the first definition for OWNERS is those who own up - a bit cheeky, I think. The second is a legal term - if someone "has title to" something, they own it (e.g. title deed). HTH.

  8. I've been musing over this for the past week or so, hoping that both 1ac and 20ac would come to me. Alas, they didn't, and I had to resort to looking at the solution here which led to even more sighing and general head smacking at my incompetence. I must have gone through every doctor combination I could think of (including the 'Who' variety) and yet I still missed it. Good puzzle.

    1. Bad luck with WATSON and AMOUNT. 1A was my favourite (and Sawbill's too, I think).
