Very nice crossword, towards the less challenging end of the Weekend Special spectrum if my time of 7 minutes is anything to go by. I originally thought of Handed on for PASSED ON, but the S checker put that right, and I needed to think a bit about my LOI RONALDO, but otherwise this went smoothly. A few genuine old favourites - ARSON and ABROAD seem to come round very frequently - but COD to BIOCHEMISTRY for the excellent surface. Many thanks Sawbill!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cedric. BIOCHEMISTRY was a bit daunting when I first looked at it.
DeleteAnd indeed the very next day after my comment above, ARSON appears again in the Quickie!
DeleteHas something gone awry with 11a? Handkerchief is not an anagram of "he drank leading" - it's got the wrong number of letters and doesn't contain either an "L" or a "G"! Did it start life as (he drank)* + leader [chief] before getting a bit mangled?
ReplyDeleteNonetheless the solution was obvious once I had sufficient checkers and didn't detract from another excellent puzzle, thank you.
Apologies. My mistake. The explanation should have read... "[out of sorts] (he drank)* + CHIEF (leading)." Now corrected.
DeleteMost enjoyable on a wet Sunday morning. Not too hard but enough to get the little grey cells working.
ReplyDeleteLast two in were 1a (I’m now on the lookout for that meaning of case) and VARIED which is almost my COD. But that goes to REIGNED which I liked having tried to work RELIT less IT into the answer.
Fortunately Ronaldo is the one footballer I have heard of.
Thanks Sawbill and John as always.
Thanks, Ian. REIGNITED and VARIED were fun to clue.
DeleteI found it quite difficult towards the end, e.g. HANDKERCHIEF, REDEFINE, & BIOCHEMISTRY.
ReplyDeleteLiked MARY ROSE, PASSED ON, among others. Thanks, Sawbill and John.
Countrywoman, belatedly.
Thank you and Seasons Greetings
