Bellringing Eliminator

As I had done the crossword for the programme (see here) and Tim had offered me a beer in payment, I visited the Bellringing Eliminator at the cathedral today on my way to my train for our Thames Path walking holiday (q.v.)

Weekend Quick Cryptic 47 - Game On by Johninterred

Click here to read about the origin of this series of crosswords.

A brief history of the origins of these crosswords for those who are new to them. As a blogger of the Times Quick Cryptic Crossword on Times for The Times every other Friday, I have often had comments on the blog bemoaning that The Times only provides a Quick Cryptic on Mondays to Fridays. When I finally gave up work at the end of February 2020, I decided that I would try my hand at compiling crosswords. It was with some trepidation that I published, in May 2020, the first of these Weekend Quick Cryptics to fill the gap. Well it seemed to go down well so I did another. And then my fellow crossword solver and commenter on Times for the Times, Phil Jordan, volunteered to produce some too. And then, more recently, so did Sawbill. So now the three of us take turns, publishing each new crossword via my Friday Quick Crossword blog. You can find an index to the complete series of crosswords here.

This time it is my turn to provide the fortnightly Weekend Quick Cryptic crossword. I hope you find the title helpful.

Clitheroe

This weekend we had a trip to Clitheroe for the christening of our great-niece Florence. We stayed with Jane and David at a rather nice rental place - 5 Saddlers Mews. We drove up on Friday afternoon and met up with everyone at The Emporium for a meal.

Dad's Removals Part II... and III

After Laura's initial move from Norwich to Bedford using Dad's Removal Van last month, I said, "If you need me to hire a van to help move the rest, let me know". Well there was still Laurence's stuff from the house he shared to move and, sure enough, I got a message asking if I was still OK to help.

Emu Egg for Breakfast

On Friday one of Dawn's pupils gave her an emu's egg. A lovely dark green colour - here it is next to a hen's egg and avocado for comparison. But what to do with it?

Today's Times Quick Cryptic

Times Quick Cryptic No 2089 by Mara

We have, I think, a pleasant, steady, middle-of-the-road Quick Crossword from Mara today. It was only the SW corner that held me up a little taking me to just over the 6 minute mark. I liked 4D, 6D and 16D in particular. Thank-you Mara. How did you all get on?

Fortnightly Weekend Quick Cryptic. This time it is Sawbill's turn to provide the extra weekend entertainment. You can find the latest crossword  here. Enjoy! If anyone is interested in our previous offerings you can find an index to them all here.

Stanton Walk

Today it was my turn to lead a walk for Joyce's Weekly Walks. I chose to do a walk from Stanton that I had planned to lead in October, which got cancelled due to bad weather so never happened. But today it would.

Another Entertaining Jumbo Crossword

I rather enjoyed this Jumbo which has a certain amount of quirkiness and whimsy enlivening the wordplay and definitions, with some taking me a while to work out.... and the style makes me think I know who our compiler is.  As usual with the Jumbo there were a couple of unknowns, but nothing I couldn't derive from the wordplay. I see on checking, though, that I have one pink square, having spelt a word wrong. Aaargh! Favourites include 16A, 17A, 54A, 12D, 32D and 34D. I was vaguely disappointed that the answer to 13A turned out not to be the tinkly TINTINNABULATION. Perhaps another day. In all, with some of the head-scratching, my solve stretched to just over 52 minutes. Great stuff. Thank-you setter. How did you all like it?

Frampton-on-Severn and Dusk at Coaley Peak

After our Purton Hulks walk on Friday, we travelled further up the  Gloucester to Sharpness canal to Saul Junction where there is a café. Alas it had stopped serving food when we got there so we had a quick cup of tea and headed to The Bell Inn at Frampton-on-Severn who served food all afternoon.

Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and the Purton Hulks

After sister Sue left to return home to Somerset on Friday we went out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in Gloucestershire. David took us to Purton to walk along part of the Gloucester and Sharpness canal and to see the Purton Hulks.
