Newbourne Walk

Today Dawn wasn't teaching so asked if we could go for a walk. I thought she and Sarah might like a shorter version of the walk I did with Joyce's group recently (see here).

Weekend Quick Cryptic 54 - Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's Phil's turn.

You can find a link to the crossword here and the answers below. Feel free to leave any comments or questions here as you would do on TfTTYou can find an index to the complete series of crosswords here.

Weekend Quick Cryptic 54 - by Phil Jordan

Click here to read about the origin of this series of crosswords.

A brief history of the origins of these crosswords for those who are new to them. As a blogger of the Times Quick Cryptic Crossword on Times for The Times every other Friday, I often had comments on the blog bemoaning that The Times only provides a Quick Cryptic on Mondays to Fridays. When I finally gave up work at the end of February 2020, I decided that I would try my hand at compiling crosswords. It was with some trepidation that I published, in May 2020, the first of these Weekend Quick Cryptics to fill the gap. Well it seemed to go down well so I did another. And then my fellow crossword solver and commenter on Times for the Times, Phil Jordan, volunteered to produce some too. And then, more recently, so did Sawbill. So now the three of us take turns, publishing each new crossword via my Friday Quick Crossword blog.

This time it is Phil's turn to provide the fortnightly Weekend Quick Cryptic crossword, Number 54 in the series.  You can try and solve the crossword interactively here on MyCrossword or here on crossword.info.  As usual you can download a PDF to print which you can find here. Alternatively you can copy and print the image below. Comments and queries are welcome with the solution post (which also gives tips on some of the clues).  I will react to any comments or queries there as soon as I can. The Big Hoot Art Trail - Ipswich

Today we traipsed around Ipswich looking for owls... three years on from wonderful Elmer Trail, Ipswich has another Art Trail - The Big Hoot. Once more we enlisted Roland to guide us round and collect all the Big Hoots (and a few Little Hoots too).

Weekend Quick Cryptic 53 - Solution

My fellow TimesforTheTimes contributors Phil Jordan, Sawbill and I are continuing to produce Quick Cryptic crosswords to fill the gap left by the Saturday Times not having one. The plan is for us to take turns, publishing one a fortnight, and this week it's my turn. The crossword is entitled "More beer, please" and has a theme in celebration of the 30th East Anglian Beer Festival, which is on this week and which is within walking distance for me. If anyone would like to join me for a drink there, let me know. You can see some of my pictures from it earlier this week here.

The East Anglian Beer and Cider Festival 2022

Yesterday saw the start of the 30th East Anglian Beer and Cider Festival - the biggest ever, with over 250 beers and 40 ciders. After last year's success, it is again being held in St. Edmundsbury Cathedral and is on daily until this Sunday, the 19th June.

Yesterday's session was for CAMRA members only, so I took advantage of that to be there about half an hour after the opening at 4pm and in time for the official opening by the Dean. It was very pleasant without the crowds.

I went again this afternoon to sample a few more of the beers and  ***Spoiler alert!*** ...

Newbourne Walk

Today we had a River Deben walk, starting and finishing in the village of Newbourne, with those poppies just before the end.

Beverley Visits Suffolk

Last seen here in Jun 2018 at the end of the Wainwright Coast-to-Coast Walk (see here), my Australian friend Beverley and fellow Wild Women are back, this time to do two weeks of walking in, first the Western Highlands of Scotland, and then, for the second week, in Southern Ireland. The photo above shows them at the Kelpies in Falkirk.

U3A Bildeston Walk

Even though it's a Bank Holiday for the Jubilee celebrations, it's still the first Thursday of the month and time for the U3A Longer Walks group monthly walk. Today we were led by Wendie and Peter on a walk from Bildeston.

Shotley Point Walk

It was a lovely sunny day so I thought I'd take Dawn and Sarah for an old favourite walk for the morning from Shotley Point, with the promise of lunch at the Butt & Oyster to follow.
