Oxburgh Hall

Today we took a trip to the Oxburgh Estate near Swaffham in Norfolk. We last visited in 2019 (see here) and since then the Hall has undergone extensive renovation, replacing the existing roof entirely.

We arrived early enough to go on the Parkland walk of about 4.5km before the 11:30 guided tour entitled "Past, Present and Future" before having some lunch and then visiting the interior of the Hall.

Here are a few of my photos.

We were one of the first ones there.

We signed up for the tour when we arrived.

We liked the apple trees in the orchard. They were laden with fruit....

...with some interesting varieties.

We set off on the Parkland walk passing the main entrance to the hall

This was new. The River Gadder is a chalk stream - quite a rare habitat.

The parkland was.. well parkland. We had missed the best of the wild flowers.

There was quite a lot of this close to the river.

It turns out to be Hemp Agrimony.

We didn't visit the chapel.

We had time to look round the garden before our tour.

Very colourful.

We met under the tree for the tour.

Jane was our guide and knew all about the history of the hall and the Bedingfeld family.

This is called the "Wow gate" as you go through it and get wowed by the view.

Jane took us round the outside of the hall stopping at each side to continue the history of the place and its owners.

It was when one of these dormer windows collapsed that they discovered the problem with the roof.

We had lunch in the old kitchen next this Victorian range.

The we toured the interior of the house.

This is the priest hole.

A final tour of the borders...

..and orchard...

...and we headed for home. A lovely day out.
