Blackness Castle and Pittenweem

Today we had a day for touring from Bridge of Allan. I thought it would be nice to visit the Fife coast and David suggested a circular route that would take us towards Edinburgh and then across the new Queensferry crossing to Fife.

Here are a few photos. Unfortunately I managed to leave my camera in Bridge of Allan so I had to resort to using my phone.

We visited Blackness Castle on the southern bank of the River Forth first. As the website says..

"Mighty fortifications make this 15th-century castle look like a ‘ship that never sailed’. Blackness was never just a peaceful lordly residence – its enduring roles were as a garrison fortress and state prison."

We were only allowed to park for 90 minutes and it took nearly all of that to see around the castle.

There was a lady in this tent demonstrating the art of caliigraphy. She did us each a bookmark using ancient scripts.

We could see the Fiorth crossings a little further east along the firth.

From the river the castle can been to be shaped like a ship.

It is all very well preserved.

Then it was on into Fife and along the coast as far as the lovely fishing village of Pittenweem.

A lovely day out. Good suggestion of the circular route, David. Thanks! You can see more of my photos here on Flickr.
