ELECTABLE may be one of the most enjoyable clues I've ever solved for the sudden clearing of the confusion and for purely schoolboy reasons - bravo. Hadn't heard of Yo Yo Ma so that was a big red herring, and I was just slow to MOHAWKS - desperately tried to make it moptops - ended up with DOYEN. Good one!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I was guessing some might not know the famous cellist, but the checkers B?W allow for only one answer and by retrofitting to the clue people should be able to deduce he is a string player.
DeleteELECTABLE, EGGHEAD, OLD BAILEY, AMERICAN DREAM, and INSTALL were my picks. I had trouble figuring out DITCH ( what land's role was) but eventually got there-thanks, John, great fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks. The clue for DITCH was maybe a bit trickier than it needed to be but I wanted the clue to end in "shore". Glad you got there eventually.
DeleteThanks very much, enjoyed the theme, esc and egghead cods. The reference in 14a was way beyond us, but the anagram and checkers saved us! Doing this early for us, normally do on Sunday, because holidaying in Ipswich. Cheers Chris and Francesca
ReplyDeleteThanks. Welcome to Suffolk! You can find plenty of walks I've done in Suffolk elsewhere on the blog. I hope you manage to avoid the football traffic today - it's the local derby with Norwich.
DeleteThanks John, we were in a local pub last night and heard all about it! Ipswich is very smart. Full of fans this morning, and lots of pubs open.
DeleteGot there eventually, DNK the film, bitcoin, haircut or cellist, and still don't get the parsing of 18a, but all workoutable from wordplay and crossers so no problem. Thanks John.
ReplyDeleteThanks Graham. Glad you managed to finish. The second meaning of DITCH is for a plane to crash-land in the sea, hence "land away from shore". I'll update the blog.
DeleteAlso didn't notice the double definition of Bow, the thing he plays with beforehand, and the bob of the head afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI found this more difficult than usual, particularly in the SE, well, in various parts of the lower half.
ReplyDeleteBiffed SATOSHI, NHO. NHO Yo-Yo Ma but guessed BOW eventually. Also I put unparsed Mohican at first, not realising MOHAWK is what Americans call the hairstyle. Should have got LOI ANGELS sooner. I would also done much, much better if I had remembered the clever theme!
Thanks vm, John. Liked DOYEN, OLD BAILEY, INCOGNITO,
Sorry, that was Countrywoman.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable as always. Didn't know 17ac "Satoshi" nor 10dn "Cockatiel", but both were generously clued and the latter felt like it had something to do with Cockatoo. Got tied up a little with 14ac "Amercian Dream", thinking the last word was "Drama", but then I had an extra "e" I couldn't account for which meant some rethinking had to be done.
