U3A Mundford Walk

Although not the furst Thursday of the month (that was New Year's Day), today we had our first U3A Longer Walks Group walk of 2026.

This was the imvite from Rosalind.

"Our next walk will be on Thursday 8th January. Please meet at Mundford Village Hall ( voluntary parking contribution) for a figure of 8, 10 mile walk.

Post code:  IP26 5DW  W3W. handyman.drifting.requires

Generally sandy paths, coffee stop at Shepherd’s Baa if open. Picnic lunch back in Mundford, and then walking into Thetford Forest to search out the crash site of the 15 Sqn. RAF Lancaster Bomber. Boots on ready to walk at 10:00am."

This was our route, with the eastwards loop first.

Here are a few of my photos.

Mundford Village Hall is rather large.

Ready to go. There were 10 of us today.

We passed the allotments.

We were soon in the woods.

We saw plenty of ice today.

Lynford Hall.

The aroboretum.

Here we found some early snowdrops.

The Shepherds Baa cafe...

...has an indoors with a log fire now.

But time to move on.

More icy paths.

Lybfird lake was frozen over.

The swans were walking on ice. We didn't think they were enjoying it. We had no volunteers to paddle from the group today.

Following the non-icy green bits.

We were amused by the number plate on this lorry.

Lunch was at St. Leaonard's Church back in Mundford.

The church was closed but there was just enough seating in the carpeted porch.

Time for the second loop of our walk.

We passed the village hall again.

Now into the forest and along long straight paths.

We found the memorial to the crew of the crashed Lancaster bomber. It is well looked after.

Back to Mundford now and we hadn't completely lost the ice.

And here we are back where we started.

A lovely, but chilly walk, and nobody fell on the ice. Thank-you Rosalind for leading us round and to the others for the additional company.
