Snape Walk Reprise

Today it was my turn to lead a walk for the U3A Bury St Edmunds Longer Walks group and I chose to repeat the walk from Snape Church that I led on Monday as it was so popular and the weather forecast was similarly fine.

This was the invite.

"Thursday 5th March. I will be leading a circular walk from Snape Church opposite the turning for Snape village on the A1094. We will meet at 9:45 to start walking at 10am. We will stop for coffee and toilets early in the walk at Snape Maltings. The route will also take in Iken, Tunstall Forest, Blaxhall and the small hamlet of Gromford. Please bring packed lunch for our stop in Tunstall Forest. The distance will be 10-11 miles. Lifts available from Skyliner Way Sports Centre at 8:30 am."

This was our route, as it had been on Monday.

Here are some of my photos.

St. John the Baptist Snape church was open so we were able to visit before the walk.

We met the churchwarden and some of the volunteers as they were preparing for some work to replace the wooden slats in the tower.

We liked this statue of St. John the Baptist.

There is an old staircase here.

The churchwarden is a local historian and has compiled this album of locals.

All ready to get walking. There were 7 of us today.

Not forgetting to notice the lovely daffodils outside the church as we set off.

We passed a few visitor counters like these today.

We were on the Sailors path and turned towards Snape Maltings with views across the marsh and mudflats. We enjoyed our walk along the path.

We were soon at the Maltings, crossing the river Alde here.

We had our coffee stop here.

Onward now past this Henry Moore sculpture.

We got to walk on some boardwalk.

We got classic views of Iken church on the Anchorage promontory.

Inland now and we passed a plastic farm. What was underneath, we wondered?

There is plenty of grass turf farming around here. We were fascinated by the machinery involved in harvesting it.

We came to the pig farm. But where were the lovely piglets we saw on Tuesday? They had all been taken away.

On now to Tunstall woods.

We had our lunch stop here with some logs to sit on.

Onward now past Blaxhall Heath.

We recrossed the River Alde here.

Not far to go now. We saw some great shows of daffodils as we passed through Gromford.

We came across some Alexanders in flower. Wow. That's early.

Back at Snape church we came by the splendid war memorial.

And here we are back where we started.

What a lovely day we had for it! Thanks to all for coming along.
