Newbourne Walk

Today we did another of my favourite walks, from Newbourne.

Joyce had asked us for our list of favourite walks and when I sent her mine it reminded her we hadn't as a group done this walk for a while. This was the invite..

"Friday March 20th an extra walk as forecast looks great. I don’t think I offered this walk last year so let’s go back to Newbourne, Hemley and Waldringfield. Let’s park and meet at Newbourne Village Hall, Mill Road IP12 4NP at 10am. (no toilets). As I haven’t been to Newbourne for a while, I am hoping it’s okay to still park there…otherwise it’s street parking. We will walk to Hemley and straight over to The Maybush at Waldringfield for drinks (approx. 11am). Please bring a packed lunch. The circular walk is about 9 miles."

This was our route, going anti-clockwise from Newbourne Village Hall.

Here are some of my photos.

We were able to park at the village hall as usual.

Time to herd the cats. There were 11 of us today.

Off we go.

We passed through the low-lying area fed by the springs in the nearby nature reserve.

We were soon at Hemley, but we didn't stop to visit  All Saints Church.

We joined the King Charles III England Coast Path. Although it is not yet complete it was inaugurated by King Charles on Thurday this week (see here). When finished next spring it will stretch 2700 miles, making the world’s longest managed coastal walking route. Read about it here.

We were never far from the River Deben.

These cottages have a lovely view.

We passed Hemley Hall.

There is a lovely bank of daffodils in the grounds.

We crossed a couple of fields and were unimpressed with this one where muck has been spread - even on the path.

We reached the river at Waldringfield Sailing Club. The path south from here through Spinny Marsh has not been usable for some time.

The harbourmater's hut had a notice saying the next high tide would be 1:05pm.

We stopped for drinks at The Maybush.

It has great views up and down the river.

Now we did a little loop up the river past these lovely holiday cottages first...

Looking back down the river.

The path follows the edge of the marsh.

I stopped to photograph this redshank walking through the gloopy mud.

The gorse is in flower.

Before we turned away from the river we got views of Woodbridge in the distance.

We left the coast path here. Beyond that gate is a new bit of the Coast Path that links up to Martlesham Wilds  We must do that bit some day.

Looping back into Waldringfield we passed this impressive magnolio tree in full flower.

This house looks odd.

Heading away from the river now.

That's the view that these houses have. Nice.

We came close to Waldringfield Church without visiting it.

Instead we turned into Church field - an early lunch stop as it has benches and picnic tables.

Onwards now.

We got sight of BT's Martlesham Heath research complex.

We returned via Newbourne Springs.

There are plenty of primroses here.

We skirted a large caravan park.

We came to the road into Newbourne.

Here we had a final drinks stop before an extra little loop south.

We admired the houses along the private road, Jackson Rd.

We have stopped here before.

Joyce pointed out these salmon coloured daffodils. Very pretty.

We were soon back in the car park where we started.

Thank-you Joyce for leading us round and thanks to the others for the additional company. You can find more details of our 9.3 mile route here on MapMyWalk or here on OSMaps or download a GPX file here and more of my photos here on Flockr.
