Jersey Day 2

We've been on holiday in Jersey with some of Joyce's Weekly Walks group for a week walking (most of) the Jersey Tidal Trail around the perimeter of the island and visiting a few of the sights.

Today we walked most of Section 3 (St. Ouen's Bay) and some of Section 4 (The North-West Coast) of the trail.

This was our route. We skipped the first bit from La Corbière Lighthouse and started at La Pulente going as far as the giant puffins before turing inland for 1/2 mile to our bus.

Here are a few of my photos.

We took a bus from Liberation Station...

...and passed La Corbière Lighthouse.

We were going to walk along this stretch today.

Onto the beach we go.

Looking back at La Corbière Lighthouse.

La Rocco Tower, built in 1796, is in the bay half a mile offshore.

I managed to catch nearly everybody here on the beach, but Steve was a little way off.

St. Ouen's Bay, being west-facing gets the prevailing wind and is the best beach for surfing on the island.

There were horses on the beach too.

In places the sand was wet, but it was firm so we didn't get wet feet.

I left the beach to walk along the path, but the others didn't.

A surfer in action.

Le Don Hilton is an 18th century guardhouse.

Dawn loves sea thrift.

Kempt tower - another Martello tower.

We liked this quirky boat-shaped house.

I passed the Military Museum and the others came up off the beach...

...to meet at the nearby Jersey Pearl café. This was our drinks stop.

Onwards towards the more challenging part of the walk.

We saw some lovely lichen here.

We saw lots of fields of potatoes, some being harvested and plenty of signs for Jersey Royal potatoes for sale.

It was a bit of a climb to get up to  Les Landes SSI.

We had good views back the way we came.

Rather surprisingly, there is a racecourse up here.

We passed this WWII German Naval Tower....

..and carried on to Grosnez Castle.

I'm sure I took some photos of it, but they seem to have disappeared.

We had our lunch here.

Onward now onto Section 5, the North-East Coast. We soon caught sight of the giant puffins.

Down in Plémont Bay we could see someone swimming.

The North coast of Jeersey is quite a contrast to the South, West and East, being quite rugged. Here we could see across to Sark.

We came to the puffins and had a group photo (see the top of the post).

Some of us were aiming to take a bus from here, but then we saw this...

Fortunately it was only 1/2 mile walk to the main road and we were able to have a drink at the Cafe Ouen as we waited 20 minutes for our bus.

Back in St Helier we passed the lovely clock above Rivoli Jewellers as it was chiming the hour and saw all the scenes go by.

A good day's walk. Thank-you Joyce for leading us round.
