11 minutes for this enjoyable puzzle, towards the stiffer end of a Weekend Special I think. STAFFORDSHIRE was a biff-then-parse, and for some inexplicable reason I was slow to see OS for sailor - one is used to AB or Tar but I had a brain fade after those two clearly didn't work. I also didn't know that TAT meant to make lace, but none of tet, tit, tot or tut seemed to be right so in it went. Many thanks Phil for a fine puzzle.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cedric - glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable puzzle, but DNF OSTEND. I forgot OS.
ReplyDeleteLiked many clues. Luckily I know a few musical terms. Enjoyed EVEREST, TAT, CUTTERS, and NONPLUS, among others.
Many thanks, Phil and John. From Countrywoman.
Ironically the hints and tips always refer to clues I can do rather than ones I can't!
ReplyDeleteCountrywoman.
Very pleasant thanks. Had forgotton OS, took ages to find the Nu and sort out the letters in the musical term, but all very doable.
ReplyDeleteI slowed up considerably in the SE. Particularly by 19d it=congress when these days we seem to use much more vulgar vocab; eventually the PDM arrived. 13a Uncut was another slow arrival - after trying to recall all those 5 letter Greeks chaps I fixed on Mu then was, obviously, stuck again. 18a Tat I think really relates to the fringes rather than the body of the lacework - I organised a large exhibition to commemorate our hamlet (127 at the last census) and the end of WW1 and as a centre of the lace industry invited a local group of lacemakers to make lace throughout and that nugget seems to have stuck. I stand to be corrected. 4a was topical after yesterday's FA Cup Final. Had a nice smile at 6d and 7d. Keep up the good work
ReplyDelete!
Failed on Ostend, found it rather confusing with "port of call" and tend for watch over. Otherwise some great clues, our cods nonplus, funny-business and Idaho. Enjoyable. Thanks, Chris and Francesca
ReplyDeleteI was lulled into a false sense of security when first few across clues went in easily but then things became more interesting leading to an enjoyable tussle to finish.
ReplyDeleteI like the sound of GLISSANDI which I’ve not seen in the plural before.
Thanks Phil and John.
Thanks to everybody. I was surprised that the Ordinary Seaman caused difficulty.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling (not entirely sure) that the merchant navy has OS's and the Royal Navy AB's, my roots are firmly the latter.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyable, but I didn't get 12dn "Lighter", and 22ac "Rookery" and 4dn "Ostend" went in unparsed. I pretty went through most of my sailor repertoire, but OS seemed to have passed me by.
