Sheringham Park Walk

Today we had a day out to the North Norfolk Coast to do a favourite circular walk from Sheringham Park.

This was the invite from Joyce.

"Wednesday May 20th Sheringham Park, Upper Sheringham, Norfolk, NR26 8TL. Please join in this lovely 8.5-mile circular walk taking in the Norfolk coast and Weybourne station. We will meet at 10.15am in the National Trust car park (free to members) but we have a few spare cards so don't let that put you off. Coffee to start with at Sheringham National Trust and then packed lunch in Weybourne, please bring a packed lunch. The rhododendrons should be looking beautiful. "

Dawn and I had last been in 2023 (see here) so it was about time we did this again, We gave Squints, Joan and Pam a lift and were joined at Sheringham Park by Joyce, Nick, Alicia, Kim and Dan. After a quick coffee, we set off.

This was our route today.

Here are some of my photos.

We arrived shortly after 10. I thought we were a bit late, but I'd got the meeting time wrong - it was supposed to be 10:15.

Dan was there already and Joyce's carload soon joined us for a coffee.

Into the park and the rhododendrons and azaleas. They were a riot of colour, as always.

Oo look! A photo including me. The thorn not between the roses. Thank-you Squints. But who took the photo? I don't remember. Joyce, I think.

Dawn standing under the handkerchief tree.

We emerged to a view of the sea and Weybourne windmill.

We passed Sheringham Hall.

Soon we got sight of Weybourne station.

The trains are operating this week. Yippee!

We decided to stay at the station to watch for the trains.

While waiting we visited the allotment and Anderson shelter.

Here comes the steam train,

There were plenty of passengers on board.

Then the second train arrived. Apart from around the station here, the line is single track, so trains going in opposite directions have to pass each other here.

Off it goes.

Dawn on sentry duty.

Now down to Weybourne village and All Saints, Weybourne church.

The Peter Broad votive candle stand is notable. It was was commissioned in 2013 by Maggie Broad, in memory of her husband Peter. It was designed by Tuecer Wilson and made by Brian Turner.

As Simon Knott tells us, Weybourne was home to an Augustinian priory (Weybourne Priory), and remains of the priory buildings survive to north and east. Even more interesting, the early 13th Century priory swallowed up an earlier late Saxon cruciform church, and the remains of the tower of that church can still be recognised to the north of the modern chancel. The north aisle of the present church is on the site of the nave of the Saxon church, the arcade between the current nave and this aisle being set in what was the south wall of that church. There is an information board about the priory in the grounds.

Onward now past the village sign.

We had lunch down by the beach.

And another photo including me (and Dawn).. Thanks again Squints.

Dawn spotted this bird. A falcon, perhaps?

Onto the coast path now and there was a profusion of sea thrift - more than we had seen before, I think.

They look dramatic against the sky looking over the cliff edge.

Looking back at Weybourne windmill.

In the distance we could see Sheringham Old Coastguard Lookout on Skelding Hill, home of Sheringham Coastwatch, but we weren't going that far along the coast path.

We came close to a meadow pipit singing away before it flew off.

We spotted both trains again on our way back to the park.

Then it was back through the lovely rhododendrons to the car park.

We climbed the tower here on the way.

But the view was a little disappointing as many of the bushes had yet to come into flower or had finished already.

But there were plenty more to see by the path.

Looking down a path towards the sea.

The ground was covered in petals here.

Back at the entrance we saw this board of what had been spotted in the park.

Yes. We saw and heard plenty of wildlife and birdsong today too.

What a lovely day out! Thank-you Joyce for leading us round and thank-you everyone else for the additional company.
