Today we had a trip to the North Norfolk Coast. This was the invite from Joyce.
"Monday 1st November; Sheringham Park (access to the park is free for everyone) , Upper Sheringham, Norfolk, NR26 8TL. Please join in this lovely 8 mile circular walk to the Norfolk coast and Weybourne station. We will meet at 10.30am in the National Trust car park (free to members) but we have a few spare cards so don't let that put you off. Coffee hopefully in Weybourne, please bring lunch. John is offering a lift from Skyliner Sports Centre at 8.30am and I'm offering transport from Mildenhall. Please get in touch if you want a lift. "
I collected three passengers and we had an easy drive to Sheringham Park starting our walk on time in some lovely autumn sunshine but a stiff breeze. This was our route through the park, to Weybourne station, Wevbourne village and along the coast before returning through the park.
It was interesting visiting in autumn - the last time I came with Dawn was at the peak of the flowering of the rhododendrons and azaleas at the start of June (see here). Here are a few of my photos from today.
The sign by the kiosk told us the viewing platforms were under maintenance so we wouldn't be climbing any of them today. There was also a QR code to scan to download this Fungi Spotter Guide... which I did.
There were some colourful trees in the park...
...and I was surprised to see a few blooms on the azaleas and rhododendrons.
My fungi spotter guide was no use for identifying these. I think they may be
scarlet hoods, also known as righteous red waxy caps.
We headed towards
Weybourne station, which has been used for filming and on-screen TV appearances, most notably as
Walmington-on-Sea railway station in the Dad’s Army episode “The Royal
Train”, as Crimpton-on-Sea railway station in the BBC TV sitcom
Hi-De-Hi! as well as the 1985 adaptation of The Moving Finger. The
North Norfolk Railway, known as the Poppy Line, wasn't running today, though.
We followed the path beside the road down to the village.
We had our coffee stop at the village store. Thank-you Pam for buying me one.
Then it was down to the beach...
...and along the coast path for a while. It was still quite windy so we were glad of our extra layers.
On our way back we stopped here for our picnic....
...before returning though the park...
...and doing an extra loop.
These were the biggest mushrooms we saw.
We got back just in time as the rain started. We had definitely had the best of the day. Thank-you Joyce for organising and leading us and to the others too for the company.
You can see more details of our route here on MapMyWalk and more of my photos here on Flickr.
