Brandon Country Park Orange Walk

Dawn and I took a wintery walk this morning in Brandon Country Park.

We hadn't done the Orange (6 mile) walk for a long time but were early enough to get it done before lunch. This was our route.

Here are a few photos.

The map of the routes in the Country Park.

There were several great tits at the bird feeders near the Copper Beach café at the start of our walk.

I remember when these trees' predecessors were logged and these ones were planted as little saplings.

Our route took us close to the Mayday Hide car park. If you wanted to do this walk without paying for parking at the Country Park, you could start it here and have a drink stop at the café 3/4 way round.

We didn't take a detour to do it, but saw this sign for the Goshawk Walk. One for another time, perhaps.

They've been logging in this area.

The trees are sparser here now.

The puddles were iced over.

We are quite close to RAF Lakenheath here and saw and heard lots of activity today. This fighter flew over us coming in to land.

A muntjac scurried away when it spotted us.

Frosty bracken.

I liked the way these bare trees had their branches coated in frost.

Some lichen growing on a branch about head height.

We crossed the heathland area of the Country Park.

There are several pingos, We did the nearby Norfolk Pingo Trail Walk once, many years ago. This website says... "Pingos were originally low hillocks that formed in permafrost (tundra) conditions 20,000 years ago during the last ice age when water beneath the surface froze to form lenses of ice pushing soil upwards, forming a small hillock. During the summer thaw, the soil on the surface would sludge off and accumulate around the periphery of the hillocks. Shallow craters were left when the ice finally melted, causing the hillocks to collapse.

These depressions have persisted in this location, producing a series of unique shallow ponds and excellent habitat for wildlife."

We liked this frozen moss.

On the lake, the ducks were ice skating on a broken off sheet of ice.

Brandon Park is now a nursing home.

And here we were back at the start.

A lovely walk, and we enjoyed our home-made chicken and vegetable soup when we got home.

You can find your way as we did just by following the markers but you can also find our 5.8 mile route here on MapMyWalk (or download a GPX file here).

Other related walks you can find on the blog include.
