Hints and tips...
Here are a few hints and tips.
- In 8A the deliveries are balls in cricket.
- Pierre in 14A indicates the answer is a word adopted from the French.
- "Opening cancelled" in 18A indicates removal of the first letter.
- 23A's use of "confronted by" is as a juxtaposition indicator.
- Unusually, in 3D the definition is neither at the front nor back of the clue.
- For 6A you don't need to know that a Chian is someone from the Greek island of Chios.
- "Pants" in the surface reading of 13D implies "pairs of pants".

From Countrywoman. Enjoyable, though not that easy. I was slow on LHS e.g. TRISTE, AKELA, and also LOI. ENGIRDLE. Liked STEER, MERE and RIO TACT. CNP ACCIDENT or EGOMANIAC, at first.
ReplyDeleteThanks vm, Phil and John.
Thanks Phil, that provided a lot of fun on a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteYou really had me going with the TRISTE and RIOT ACT crossover. What on earth was going on with 14a I thought, making no sense of the clue but finally spotted TRIESTE and it fell into place. That’s one of the joys of these puzzles when something that looks impossible resolves itself. Then 3d followed shortly after.
Thanks also to John.
I found this harder than other Weekend specials, taking nearly 17 minutes. I think that is my slowest for a successful completion since these extra puzzles started. I was not helped by putting in Stay-over for STOP-OVER, but the real holdups were TRISTE (I wasn't expecting a French word as the full answer, as opposed to a component of an answer, even though I see dictionaries recognise it as a known loan-word), ENGIRDLE (not a word I've ever met), and AGHAST (where I've not met the spelling Agha for what I call Aga, as in the Aga Khan). But even apart from those I was not fast - I shall blame lack of sleep due to the very sultry weather! Many thanks Phil for the puzzle.
ReplyDeleteSlow, slow, quick, quick slow just about sums me up today! Couldn't summon up enough schoolboy French for 14a until the spelling became obvious. 2d was egotistic until I was forced to reappraise.. Not sure I've read or heard 22a but thad to be. Lots to like elsewhere! Thanks to all involved in keeping us fixed over these Sundays...
ReplyDeleteThanks to all of you. I agree it was maybe a stiffer than usual test.
ReplyDeleteMost enjoyable, with our favourites riot act and egomaniac, and accident. Managed this reasonably quickly by our low standards, probably a wavelength thing. Engirdle did lead to two sets of raised eyebrows but fun to get. Thank you very much
ReplyDeleteChris and Francesca
Wavelength is an odd thing, but knowing who set the puzzle can definitely be helpful.
DeleteSounds like a great collaborative series—nice to see the rotating setter format keeping things fresh. Looking forward to trying this week’s puzzle before peeking at the answers!
