Staying at the Bramley Apple Inn in Southwell, I just had to do the Bramley Apple Heritage Walk. Not too far for a lunchtime walk, my sister Sue came with me. This was our route, starting from the minster and finishing at the Bramley Apple... with a brief backtrack to find the house where the original apple tree lives... although this story says it is not well.
'The Bramley Apple story
starts with Mary Ann Brailsford, a young Southwellian who took some pips from
the apples her mother was preparing and planted them in a flower pot. As one of
the pips was doing so well, it was later transferred to the young girl's garden
where it began to thrive. It is this tree that first began to bear a unique
apple, one that has become a favourite of the nation and one of the most
respected apples in the world.'
..says the trail guide. Here is the eponymous Inn...
Unfortunately, the brewery to which it is tied, Springhead Brewery, has recently gone into administration and was unable to supply any beers. So there I was staying in a pub without and cask ales!
Anyway.. onto our walk... Here is the Bramley Apple tree in the Car Park for the Bramley Centre (aka the public library).
Further along the way we paused at The Final Whistle...
...for a drink and some lunch. The Charcoal Ploughman's pie was quite something. At the end we came to the location of the original tree.
So now you know! A pleasant and none too taxing walk despite the heat. You can see details of our route here and a more of my photos on Flickr.
