The Great War Huts

Today we preceded our weekly walk with a visit to The Great War Huts just outside Hawstead.

Joyce had taken the group there before but it was while we were away, so we were glad of an opportunity to visit. They aren't generally open to the public but do have a monthly site tour, and this was one of them.

It started with a fascinating talk about the project.

Then we had a tour of some of the huts and trenches.

This is the plan for the site.

We had a nice sunny day for the visit.

The Girton hut.

A demonstration of toeing the line.

Inside the Girton hut, it is work in progress.

Outside there are some flowers.

Jane got to set off the catapult.

Bosh!

Then it was on to the trenches.

Unfortunately my camera went funny and had to be restarted after a number of ruined photos.

Out the front in the car park were some more bright poppies.

I liked the orders posted in the sentry hut.

Well worth the visit. Thanks Joyce for booking us all on it and the staff for their hospitality.
