Hockwold-cum-Wilton Walk

Despite the drizzly conditions, today we went out to Hockwold-cum-Wilton for a morning walk

and to see the snowdrops at St James Church. This was a repeat of a walk we did about 2 years ago (see here).

This was our route, going clockwise from the Village Hall.

Here are some of my photos.

We parked at the Village Hall and headed for the church.

The Red Lion wasn't open today as it's Monday.

St. James, Wilton  church dates from the 14th Century and has an impressive spire.

And then we found the snowdrops. As this site says, "A monument on the north wall is in memory of Canon Hutt and his wife Mary, a much loved and respected parson of the village in the late 1800s. His wife was devoted to the welfare of the villagers. The churchyard is covered in springtime with the snow-white blooms of the snowdrops planted by her and the village children in the early years of 1900. The descendants of the family still live in the village".

Then it was on to our walk down and along a stretch of the Little Ouse. It joins the Great Ouse just a few miles further downstream at Brandon Creek.

The sluice gates on the river, dated 1962. are impressive.

We saw a couple of heron. Here's one of them.

The Little Ouse flowed peacefully on as we turned back towards the village.

This Highland Cow was sheltering her calf here.

One last set of snowdrops by the road as we  reached the edge of the village.

We passed the village sign just before we reached the car.

What a lot of snowdrops! Lovely! It's just a pity we didn't have the blue sky we had last time.
