Super crossword with many lovely clues. Shout-outs for GLUCOSE - very clever use of cos - and the inclusion of Mel and friends in SOME LIKE IT HOT. That took some finding! All in, a 9 minute completion, so perhaps on the easier side (or perhaps I was just on form), but a puzzle of the highest standard. Many thanks Sawbill.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cedric. I couldn't resist MEL + I + KEITH
ReplyDeleteLovely crossword which we worked out over lunch. Easier thankfully than yesterday's.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Glad the level of difficulty was about right
DeleteThanks Sawbill 😄 . Deftly put together (grid, crossers, blend of easier and harder clues) to make it a lovely Sunday morning QC.
ReplyDeleteI did use glucose a bit back in my confectionery days, its a bit like a mild clear honey.
Zak
Thanks Zak.
DeleteExcellent crossword, thanks. Brain must be a bit numb as I thought of fairway and it still didn't click as a reasonable distance for ages.
ReplyDeleteGlucose is a white powder when solid, and is the sweetness in syrup. It is the "fuel" that all animal life runs on. All of the carbohydrate that you eat is broken down into glucose and then used to power your muscles and organs.
Thanks Graham. Until you and Zak mentioned it, I had rather taken GLUCOSE for granted.
DeleteThankyou, Sawbill for this enjoyable puzzle. I don’t often find (make?) the time to tackle these weekend crosswords, but I’m glad I did today.
ReplyDeleteA little short of 35 minutes for me, but technically a DNF as I allowed myself to check an incorrect letter in my first solution to HOT TUB. Still, it’s a very sunny Sunday and I’m quite relaxed about that.
Thank you and I, too, am enjoying the sunshine ... near Bath (which is not OTT in the centre apart from the tourists).
DeleteI never parsed the clue correctly and was barking up the wrong tree trying to complete TOO T__.
DeleteMany thanks, Sawbill. Fun puzzle. I took a while to get going as I seemed to have lost my anagram hat, but then everything fell into place. I actually watched SOME LIKE IT HOT the other day - must be the first time I’d seen the whole film, usually one just sees a snip of Marylin on the train! FOI SEA, LOI ROBERTA. Also liked FAIRWAY, FATHOM. By the way, the answers give the wrong anagrist for WINNIE THE POOH. Should be White iPhone On.
ReplyDeleteThanks again from Countrywoman.
Oops. Well spotted. Thanks. Blog corrected.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed it. I bet none of us can visualise Winnie the Pooh with a white iphone, however.
DeleteThanks, Sawbill, great fun.Totally missed parsing of HOT TUB until I read Solutions here! RELATIONSHIP, SHORT FUSE, FATHOM, and SHORT FUSE were favourites- okay, now back to the weekly puzzle routine!
ReplyDeleteThanks, yes, and back to the weeky puzzle routine for me.
DeleteOops, CIGARETTE END instead of repeated SHORT FUSE!
DeleteVery enjoyable solve in the sun... Thanks for putting in the fort for us all!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I am in the sun now myself. Off to Madrid on Thursday.
DeleteThanks, very enjoyable. As others have said, SOME LIKE IT HOT was my favourite, although I thought it was an anagram, I’ll confess.
ReplyDelete- Doofenschmirtz
Thank you. I seem to remember that it was an anagram originally before I refined it.
DeleteVery enjoyable, cods to fairway, fathom, bombast (lovely word). Chris and Francesca
ReplyDeleteThanks both. Now back to setting the next one.
DeleteJust joining the chorus of thanks and appreciation to Sawbill for a most enjoyable crossword.
ReplyDeleteYANK made me smile and CIGARETTE END took a bit of working out and was last one in.
Thanks Ian. CIGARETTE END was often the LOI of the testers.
