Fine puzzle, all done in 11 minutes. But that hides a real breezeblock as I sailed through all but 12D in superfast style and then could not work out ABATED for ages. Eventually decided it had to be and only then (d'oh) saw the parsing. No idea why ...
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Sawbill for a most enjoyable solve.
Thanks Cedric.
DeleteYes, ABATED was slow to come for me too- first thought maybe ABASED? Similarly I thought would GALAPAGOS work for ARCHIPELAGO? ( well sure, I guess if it was spelled differently) Favourites were CHIME, LADDERS, CRANKS UP, and GO UNDER- thanks, SAWBILL and John, great fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks, as always. Great to see which clues solvers liked.
DeleteNice puzzle. Also held up by abated and mere intersection. Half parsed abated with pdm on reading the blog John so thanks both. TC
ReplyDeleteThanks, TC. I like pdms.
DeleteVery nice puzzle but I reluctantly put in ABASED for 12d. It fitted the definition but I couldn’t come up with a drink ending in _ased.
ReplyDeleteFavourites were 14a LADDERS, 13d ASTRONAUT and 10a GO UNDER.
Thanks Sawbill and John.
Thanks, Ian. I never thought of ABASED while setting.
DeleteQuite slow today as I found this harder than the usual weekenders and couldn’t get going very fast. Then pennies began to drop like ARCHIPELAGO, MADAGASCAR and CRANKS UP. Liked LADDERS, FOR EXAMPLE, among others. LOsI ABATED, MERE. and the AIR part of RIFLE, and GO UNDER (great clue).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sawbill and John. Countrywoman.
Thank you. I couldn’t resist UN and DER.
DeleteEnjoyed this! Liked the misdirection at 14a where the knee jerk was to look for cricketing terms. Also liked the energetic detectives, foreign articles and parish flyer. Same hold up as others with LOI 12d . Thanks for the entertainment this morning!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andrew. I wondered if LADDERS in stockings might be a bit obscure these days.
DeleteEnjoyed the struggle, ladders and fresh air, and also go under all favourites. Failed on the last hurdle 12d, could get ab but too thick to get the last missing letters. Thanks very much
ReplyDeleteThanks for persevering. 'Had' for 'ATE' was a bit tough, probably.
DeleteNo problems, our bad as they say, , Chris and Francesca
