Great Barton Snowdrop Walk

Today we had a local walk with Joyce's group... and an amazing turn out of 27 walkers!

This was the invite from Joyce.

"Friday February 16th   We will meet at Bury St Edmunds Train Station.railway station at 10.30am.  You can also park locally in Northgate Avenue (what3words ///milder.column.exacts) for free. I have mapped out a 12 mile circular walk that heads to Great Barton, We should see a great display of Aconites and Snowdrops. Please bring a packed lunch. We hope to have a quick drinks stop at The Bunbury Arms pub.  We have to be back at the trains for 3.20pm so it will be a brisk walk.

For a shorter walk, (7.5 miles) I would suggest parking at Skyliner Way Sports Centre and then walking the 0.65 mile to the Flight of Peace roundabout on Lady Miriam Way/Mount Road. Map below . A few of you have already told me that this is their option so you shouldn't be alone. The larger group are aiming to be at the roundabout at 11.20am so maybe allow 15 mins from Skyliner."

Dawn and I decided to intercept the party coming from the station on Mount Road and walked to meet them stopping by the seat 2/3 up the hill. By then we had been joined by Squints who also lived nearby.

After joining the group we walked up Mount Road to the roundabout with The Flight of Peace sculpture, where we met the others and our circular walk started.

This was our route from there.

Here are a few of my photos.

We stopped to wait here.

Here they come. What a lot of walkers!

Here we joined up with those who had parked at Skyline sports centre... and now we were a group of 27.

Crossing the railway line at Cattishall crossing.

Our first stop would be Holy Innocents, Great Barton.

In the churchyard.

Inside the church.

Dawn had her whistle with her, which was useful in gathering everyone to move on.

Our lunch stop was at the Bunbury Arms.

Then it was loop round through some fields, with lovely views...

...and back through Great Barton,

These lovely crocuses were at the top of Church Road.

Eventually we found some aconites.

What chance of herding 27 walkers together for a group photo? Hmm.

Back to Cattishall crossing now.

And here we are back at the official start.

Thank-you Joyce for leading us all round and to everyone else for the company. You can see more of my photos here on Flickr and more details of our 7 miles route here on MapMyWalk (or download a GPX file here).
