Saint Vigor's Fulbourn

After our visit to Anglesey Abbey yesterday, we went with Kirsty and David to have a look round Fulbourn and get a bite to eat.

We went first to The Six Bells, where we had some excellent food (and beer)...

...and then went for a little walk around the village...

...including visiting the local church, St. Vigor's with All Saints.

It is one of only two churches in England dedicated to St. Vigor, You can see it's Historic England listing here.

"Saint Vigor  (died circa 537 AD) was a French bishop and Christian missionary. He fervently opposed paganism and reputedly founded a monastery, later known as Saint-Vigor-le-Grand. In Bayeux, Normandy, he destroyed a pagan temple that was still in use and built a church on the grounds. Vigor was venerated from an early date in Bayeux, where he had been bishop..The successful Norman conquest brought his cult to England. His name appears in an eleventh-century breviary at Worcester.

Two English churches have been dedicated to Vigor; one in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire, the other in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset".

Wait a minute.... Isn't Stratton-on-the-Fosse just down the road from sister Sue? Indeed it is... less than 3 miles away!

As it says here...

"The Anglican Church of St Vigor in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset, England, dates from the 12th century and has been designated as a Grade I listed building.[1] Saint Vigor was a French bishop and Christian missionary. After the Norman conquest of England, his cult moved from France to England. This church is one of only two English churches dedicated to him, the other being at Fulbourn in Cambridgeshire."

Well, even though she couldn't be with us, it was good to get a reminder of sister Sue at our partial family get-together.

You can see more of my photos of Fulbourn and St. Vigor's here on Flickr.
