Hints and tips...
The across answers in the grid contain words from the refrain of the song "Climb Every Mountain" from the Sound of Music (shown in red below). Hear it played here on the mighty Wanamaker organ at Macy's in Philadelphia, which sadly closed down last month (see here).
- "For all to see" in 9A is a reference to a film classification.
- In 11A the "tots" could be of whisky.
- 21A is a 4 part charade.
- In 14D "over" is a reversal indicator.
- 16D starts with an apostrophe.
- The "contrary girl" in 18D has silver shells in her garden.

Great puzzle thanks! One question - should this be start to search? Artist in East London suburb starting to search for mythical sources of gold (8)
ReplyDeleteRAINBOWS - RA (Royal Academician) IN BOW (East London suburb) S (son).
Thanks. Glad you liked it. Oops. You are right... Will correct the blog.
DeleteGood fun and cleverly done. I am not really familiar with the theme but got there in the end. 21a had me going out through Redbridge as far as Romford until I twigged the construction was like 12d Amends. Thanks again to you and the others for spending the time and effort to give us some amusement every dry fortnight!
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew. Glad you found it fun. Yes it was a bit sneaky having "in" as part of the charade in 21A rather than meaning an inclusion.
DeleteNice one John. I had to work hard in the NW corner to get BRALESS, INNIT and STATUE and couldn’t see where the U in the latter came from until you explained it - very clever.
ReplyDeleteLiked the Sound of Music theme.
Thanks again for the entertainment.
Thanks, Ian. U = "for all to see" is perhaps a bit of a crossword cliche, but I used it as it is something worth remembering when it crops up again.
DeleteExcellent, thanks John, and Happy Easter to all.
ReplyDeleteCOD (Corner of the Day) is SW for sure 😄
Zak
Thanks, Zak. I was quite pleased with my clues for that corner. MARRY took me an age to find a surface that worked.
DeleteStuck on TAINT for a while but otherwise straightforward. Many thanks for our fortnightly top-up. it is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Yes. It's a bit sneaky-setterish to include and answer that starts with an apostrophe.
DeleteYes, great puzzle, except BRALESS! Sorry, po faced about this kind of joke.
ReplyDeleteAll finished. Liked Sound of Music theme, plus MARRY (COD), LOBES,. CNP FIND, STATUE.
Happy Easter to all.
Countrywoman, resting after cooking massive lunch.
Sorry if I inadvertently caused offence. MARRY and FIND were two of my favourites.
DeleteTook a long time to parse EFFORTS and DREAMS. I thought the Scottish farmer was maybe a cotter and the revolutionary was maybe Che so very relieved to finally see the reversed hidden! TAINT and MOUNTAIN were favourites- great fun, thanks, John!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I couldn't resist that potentially disturbing surface for DREAMS. MOUNTAIN was maybe a bit devious, but we BEN in a recent Times Quick Cryptic.
DeleteThanks very much for a fun puzzle, particularly liked taint and roadway, and the dog dd. Perfect for an egg-day afternoon. Chris and Francesca
ReplyDeleteThanks. "Egg-day afternoon". LOL.
Delete11 minutes for this excellent crossword, with only two clues holding me up - for the piece of art in Alabama I had Mobile (my thinking was that Mobile is a city in Alabama, and also can be a piece of art) until that made the clues crossing it impossible, and I never (never never) remember that in crosswordland, IT has all sorts of meanings it has nowhere else. It = attractive quality? I challenge anyone to say they have heard that in real life these last 60 years.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks John for the puzzle, very enjoyable.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Interesting point about "IT". I may be guilty of perpetuating a crossword cliche. I was surprised to find that the term "IT-girl" celebrated its centenary in 2023, but I think the term is still used. See this article... https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/what-is-it-about-an-it-girl
