Very nice puzzle with a few chewy bits - I did not know AUBADE but as you say in the hints, it is possible to construct it from the wordplay, and OSLO was easy to get (how many 4-letter cities start with O?) but rather more challenging to parse. PLEASED was interesting - partly made up of initial letters, but then with ED tacked on. All done in 8:37 for a good start to the weekend, and thank you Phil.
ReplyDeleteThank you - I wasn't sure that the clue for OSLO belonged in a QC, but everyone was happy with it on the road test. As you say, easy enough to solve, trickier to parse. Sawbill recommended me to listen to "AUBADE" by Soft Machine. It's well worth finding - only a couple of minutes long, but evocative and easy on the ear.
ReplyDeleteYes, OSLO was very tricky! I caused myself much lost time by throwing in AURORA and VOICE RECORDER before looking more closely. SPYGLASS, OCCUPIES, and CALL OUT were my faves. Tough but fair challenge!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't resist trying this in a fallow period this afternoon. A couple of chewy bits with a DNK Aubade. Liked the clue device 'you leave' in 14a. Rodeo had to be but was not comfortable with the 'rode'. A good puzzle and enjoyable. Thanks!
ReplyDelete"Was up" is long-standing crossword parlance for being mounted on a horse. It's just one of those old compiler's go-to tricks, and I'm sure it will turn up in another puzzle before too long.
ReplyDeleteNice stroll through DNK Aubade but eminently gettable. Thanks Phil & John
ReplyDeleteRather dimly failed on CALL OUT and LARK. Guessed AUBADE. Liked STEPSON (COD), BLENDER, APES, PRINTER, PEAS, among others. CNP ENTIRE, OSLO, ARMS. NHO Glass but biffed.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Phil and John.
Countrywoman.
Cod stepson. But failed on lark! Spyglass a neat clue. Thanks very much. Chris and Francesca
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody!
ReplyDeleteLovely stuff - for some reason PASSOVER was very slow to come to mind. That gave me the AU of AUBADE - hadn't ruled out ORB-D- until then. Really enjoyed BLENDER and nice to be reminded of Cantona.
ReplyDeleteI seem to be taking longer to comment on here. A lovely puzzle as usual, but I confess I was flummoxed by 21dn "Apes" (which is what I thought it should be) as I had put Eyeglass for 24ac which I didn't even consider was incorrect. I didn't know 4dn "Aubade" either, however it was easily clued. Thanks!
