Thorpe Morieux Walk

I missed out on this last week as Joyce ran out of spaces...

"I am going to offer the Thorpe Morieux walk which is a circular 10 mile loop. It links Brettenham, Kettlebaston and Preston St Mary along the way. Please be prepared to cross a field or 2! The walk will be on Tuesday April 6th …alfresco toilets of course. Please contact me to reserve a place and I’ll be in touch re timings and meeting place. "

...but she led it again today...

"Please park at the Village Hall (details below) to start at 10.30am on Wednesday April 14.  Pls bring drink and lunch with you and don’t wear your new UGG trainers!

Joyce x"

I remembered the walk well as I had led it for Joyce's group just before the first lockdown last March (see here). But today we did it in the opposite direction. There were 5 of us in total and it was a first chance for me to meet and walk with Tim and Helen and Ann this year. This was our route...

...heading anti-clockwise from Thorpe Morieux village hall. It was a bright, mostly sunny day, even if it wasn't too warm and I wore just a jumper without a coat. It was a bit cold for shorts, though. I forgot to reload the SD card into my camera and had only the internal memory to store photos, so not many photos today, but here are a few.

We needn't have worried about mud - the ground was bone dry and rock hard.

The path took us past the stunning Down Hall, with the River Brett running past the bottom of the garden...

...and odd animal statuary in the meadow across the river.

We had a view of Lavenham Church, which we will see up close next week,.

At Preston St. Mary we passed the Six Bells, Est. 1416, as it says on the wall, but it isn't open at Wednesday lunchtimes at the moment.

We stopped for drinks in the churchyard of the eponymous St. Mary, Preston.

We looked in vain for lambs in this flock of sheep.

We did see plenty of hares today, though.

Our lunch break was at Brettenham Village Hall where we were able to sit in the sunshine and out of the wind. The playground was allegedly open, but these swings aren't. I picked up this Discover Suffolk leaflet of circular walks by the entrance - some walks for another day, I think.

We saw a couple of gliders. Here is one of them being towed. We wondered how long they would stay aloft for today.

Brettenham, according to the leaflet I picked up, has 29 grade 1 and 2 listed buildings. This will be one of them.

Soon we were heading back into Thorpe Morieux via the church.

What was everyone looking at in this field next to the church?

It was some sheep with their lambs.

Lovely to see. Well that was a great group walk. I'm looking forward to more soon! Thanks Joyce for organising it and leading us, and to Ann, Tim and Helen for the additional company.

You can see more detail of our route here on MapMyWalk.
