West Stow Forest and River Walk

It is our wedding anniversary today and Dawn and I went for a walk. We did a route we hadn't done before from the Ordnance Survey book "Suffolk - Outstanding Circular Walks", number 10 - "Forest and Riverside from West Stow. Well sort of... as you will see. This was our actual route.

Here are a few photos...

We started here - I parked by the road here rather than drive up the bumpy path to the car park. But I needn't have worried as the huge potholes I remembered had been repaired.

Our path skirted the edge of the forest. It was very pleasant in the afternoon sun.

The mahonia is just coming out.Ot will give a lovely scent when the flowers open fully.

Oh oh! What is this? The route shown in the book is blocked off! How can it be wrong?

We took a detour north along the edge of the woods and then back round a field.

When we got to Wordwell Hall we could see the signpost for the other end of the path. How odd.

We took a little detour to visit the tiny Wordwell church, no longer used for services, but still maintained. It was locked so we couldn't go in, though.

There was a stile at the end of the path back to the road.

We passed through a large pig farm. The pigs looked happy.

I think these are the rare oxlips rather than cowslips.

The water tower was sold last year with an asking price of £1m and is now being converted into a home (see here).

We walked through some of the grounds of Culford School passing the lake...

...before joining the Lark Valley Path. We wondered what these flowers are. [Update: They're marsh marigolds aka King cups - thanks, Joyce].

Dawn hadn't walked along here before and marveled that we were between two legs of the river.

I liked these bulrushes.

We left the river and headed back to the car. What is this? Is it a deer?

Yes it is! (see photo at the start).

Nice walk and some nice sumshine. It was still a bit chilly but no snow... unlike yesterday!

You can see more details of our walk here on MapMyWalk and more of my photos here on Flickr.
