Today I attended my first
U3A monthly lecture in
the Apex...
..."Japan - Bowing to Tradition", given by
Jim Holmes, who came all the way from Cheshire to present to us. This was the listing...
There were about 150 in the audience, I would guess, for a very interesting talk lasting about 1 hour, accompanied by some great photographs. He gave us lots of insights to the country and culture of Japan, including the diversity of the landscape and climate and the dichotomy of being modern yet embracing tradition, illustrated by plenty of personal experiences along the way. One of the funniest was his phot of a youngster struggling to eat with chopsticks - he told us that many families have given up on them, but some children are sent to Chopstick School to learn how to use them.
Well worth the walk into town and back. If you get the chance to go and hear one of his talks then do go.
