Barrow and Denham Castle Walk

"Shall we go for a walk?", asked Dawn, back from the hairdressers. Well there was plenty of time before lunch so I suggested Walk 48 from my AA 50 Walks in Suffolk book - Across the fields to Denham Castle.

This was our route.

We parked by the War memorial in the centre of the village - previously all the walks I had done from Barrow started at  The Old Cow Shed. So we saw some of the village sights at the start.

The War memorial was the official start of our walk.

One of the two duckponds had some lovely flowers by it.

But very shortly we were on paths familiar to me - in fact our walk was the reverse of the Barrow and the 3 Churches walk, but without the 3 churches bit. But it was all new to Dawn.

No deer to be seen today, but we did see a pair of hunting birds. Here is one of them.

The apples on the trees just before the castle are looking tasty.

We enjoyed reading the display board about Denham Castle and Withgar, the last Saxon Lord of Desning.

In one of the dead trees in the castle was perched and odd bird. An egyptian goose, perhaps?

The views north weren't as clear as last time.

I hadn't spotted this trig point before - it's at 103m above sea level.

We passed these cottages and headed back towards Barrow....

...remembering to turn right and go through this hole in the hedge.

We loved the wildflowers in the verges, particularly in this field.

The path from Frog Hall to Barrow Hall was even more overgrown than last time. More nettle stings for me in my shorts, but Dawn was OK in her jeans.

We went through the churchyard of Barrow'sAll Saints Church.

And soon we were back in the centre of Barrow passing the baptist chapel again and back to the car by the war memorial....

...and home in time for lunch. That made a nice morning walk. I think I'll add it to the list of  pop-up walks to offer to the Ramblers.
