I've just been catching up on last week's Times Literary Supplement crossword, set by Myrtillus... aka, in real life, Robert Price, one of the 3 brilliant Sunday Times Crossword setters. Rather disconcertingly the crossword was printed with the Down clues on the left of the Across clues which caused me to muck up my paper copy by mixing up 18A and 18D. All successfully solved in the end with much enjoyment. But the clue that sent me down memory lane was this one..
11A Baroque composer's unfinished tale containing too much (5)
The "unfinished tale" is LIe without the e and you put OTT (over the top; too much) inside to get Antonio LOTTI, the baroque composer. (Read about him here)....
Which brought back memories of his brilliant 8-part choral setting of Crucifixus, which I remember enjoying singing with the St Michaels Singers many years ago.
Listen to Tenebrae performing it here...
or directly here.
Listen to all the suspensions particularly at the beginning where the eight parts all pile on top of each other. Great stuff! Can we have it on our "playlist" for our 2023 reunion please, Guy?
