Today we traveled to Oakhill in Somerset to visit my sister Sue for a few days. We arrived in good time and were able to go for a walk this afternoon. Sue suggested a circular walk including a stretch along part of the Fosse Way.
This was our route.
Being in the Mendips we got a good bit of up and down and walked a total of nearly 7 miles. Here are a few of my photos.
Oakhill High Street... but we walked the other way.
Lovely crocosmias
We left the village and headed south up the Fosse Way. Soon we had some good views looking back.
We were gobsmacked when we had to give way to 3 off-road vehicles on a jolly down the path. And in one of them a small boy was on the drivers lap holding the steering wheel. A bit further on we saw a sign saying "No unauthorised vehicles", but maybe this stretch is a free-for-all.
We continued up and over Beacon Hill and down the other side. At Bodden we found the remains of the ancient Bodden wayside cross.
The sun had come out by the time we reached the Poachers Pocket in Chelynch but it wasn't open for us to take on any refreshments.
Some of the footpaths looked a little challenging. I didn't have a machete with me so we kept to the road...
...which was sometimes sunken and canopied with overhanging trees.
Back in Oakhill the sun was shining on the apex of All Saints church.
We decided the decoration on top was broken and maybe used to be a full circle.
Well that was a good leg stretch before dinner. Thank-you Sue. You can see more details of our route here on MapMyWalk.,
