Whitewell Walk

Tonight we are staying at The Inn at Whitewell after Chris and Emma's wedding there later today (q.v.). We stayed overnight last night at the (cheaper) Premier Inn in Burnley and came here first thing this morning. With a bit of time to spare this morning we decided to take a short walk from the hotel's booklet of 5 local walks.

We did "Walk 1 : Stepping Stones and Burholme Bridge."

But first a few photos of the hotel.

The log fire by the entrance.

View of the River Hodder.

The dining room looks over it.

The hotel has its own Vintners inside!

The bar had a good selection of draught beers.

The Inn has won plenty of awards.

The sitting area near the fire.

All very comfy! Now onto the walk. This was our route - the reverse of that in the booklet so the stepping stones came at the end.

Dawn's brother Jonathan joined us. It was raining off and on. The path, at first, took us along the side of the field next to the road.

We rejoined the road to cross the River Hodder via the Grade II listed Burholme Bridge, built in the late 18th century.

The view downstream from the bridge.

Now we climbed gently along the road.

We turned off to pass Road Barn cottage.

There was an old cheese press by New Laund Farm.

Now it was downhill back to the river. That's where we're heading - the Inn. We had a bit of squelchiness as we descended.

Now for the stepping stones, referred to in the walk description as "an element of mild adventure".

I showed the way. "Come on. It's easy", I shouted across.

Jonathan followed me gingerly.

But Dawn decided it was too scary and turned back to walk the way we came.

Shortly after, I took the car round to meet her, so she didn't have retrace her steps all the way. That was fun despite the wet and rain.

You can see more details of our route here in MapMyWalk and more of my photos here on Flickr.
