Wortham and Diss Walk

Today we have a guest post for a walk I was invited to go on, but couldn't because I had my flu jab booked for lunchtime. Many thanks to Joyce and Tania for the content. Maybe I should get them to do all the walk posts in future!

This was the invite:

"This week we are meeting on Monday November 14th. It is a 10-11 mile walk that some of us have done before but I may change the direction. Please park at Wortham Village Hall, near the tennis courts for a 10am start, Willow Corner, Church Road, IP22 1PS.  This walk involves some road walking, a visit to Wortham Church, a walk around Diss Mere and the Boardwalk.

Wendy is from Diss , so she will kindly assist in leading us to our refreshment break at Corn Hall, the Boardwalk and the Community Woodland. Diss is a very tranquil town. I think you will enjoy it."

Here is what Joyce wrote about it, and Tania's photos.

Wortham – it was Worth it!

Today, a dozen walkers turned out for an interesting circular walk from Wortham to Diss and back again. Using portions of the Angles Way,  we enjoyed temperatures of 14c and gin clear blue skies.

This was the route today.

We set off from Wortham Village Hall at 10am in the sunshine, with most of us having left foggy conditions at home. We walked some field edges...

...to St. Mary's, Wortham Church

It has carvings on the pew ends and some beautiful stain glass windows.

We continued walking to the far west corner of Wortham Ling and immediately enjoyed some softer sand underfoot. Ling is another word for Heather.

We proceeded into Diss from Roydon Fen and soon we were at Diss Mere. The ‘floating’ Boardwalk was open today and from the terrace, we had a panoramic view of the wildlife garden and Mere.

We then enjoyed a lunch stop at The Corn Hall, where a few cheese scones were consumed along with hot drinks. Suitably refreshed we visited the newly signposted Parish Fields Woodland area...

...and then continued to Quaker Wood which is a beautiful 5.5 acre community wood.

We were now on our return to Wortham when we came across this ‘strawberry tree’ (Arbutus Unedo) .

We discovered a delightful riverside footpath along the edge of the River Waveney before picking up more paths back to our cars. The sun wasn’t so high in the sky as we were returning but we all agreed that the unseasonably warm weather was a tonic !

More walks in the area can be found on the Discover Suffolk Website

That looked lovely. Sorry I missed it. Thank-you Joyce and Tania.

You can  read about our walk last year, with more details about the church here and find more details of the route we took last year here on MapMyWalk or a GPX of today's route here.
