Dunwich Heath Walk

About 10:30 this morning, Dawn suddenly asked "Would you like to go for a walk? How about Dunwich?". Hmm. It was a bit late in the day to be starting out to go that distance, but, for a change, it wasn't raining and it would be nice to walk with Sarah and William. And, like yesterday's walk, there shouldn't be any mud. I checked on the National Trust website and found we didn't have to book. So I hastily put together a picnic lunch and we managed to get on the road by 11:15.

This was our route, starting off on the Orange walk but then deviating to walk around the edge of Dunwich Heath.

We arrived about 12:30... and ate our lunch before starting out. Pork and pickle pies and ham, tomato and piccalilli sandwiches.

Look - the bracken is the same colour as Sarah's hair.

We saw a couple of deer a 100m or so away across the heath.

Smile please.

We found some colourful fungus on a tree stump.

We stopped to look for the solitary bees and wasps that tunnel into the sandy bank here, but didn't see any...

...nor did we see anything in the ponds.

We carried on down to the beach. The sea was very calm and there was hardly any wind.

Is that a cormorant?

In the distance we could see the beacon from Southwold lighthouse.

But then, highlight of our day, we saw a seal swimming offshore.

Back to the car park and one last view down the coast towards Sizewell Power Station in the fading daylight.

That was nice walk. Next one - our traditional Christmas Eve walk... more anon.
