Knettishall Heath Walk

Today Dawn and I went for a walk at Knettishall Heath, a favourite spot for a winter walk as the heath doesn't get muddy (but...), last visited in November (see here). No route to show as my tracker failed, but we started along the River ( blue and a bit of the black walks) , went up the side of the reserve on the Icknield Way and then back via the bridleway at the edge of the woods on the south of the reserve (the Pine walk) before crossing back via the green and red routes to the central car park.

Here are a few photos.

The River Little Ouse was very full and flowing quite fast. In fact it had spilled over into the fields and woods on the other side.

We got to where the blue route turned away from the river...

We didn't have waders so that wasn't the way to go! We tried the black route...

Aptly coloured on the way markers and map - the colour of the soil mud is very dark. And muddy. And overflown with river. So we had to back-track along the blue route to the middle car park and then follow the path parallel to the road. Here we came across the ponies.

They didn't seem to mind us at all, but kept on grazing happily.

We saw a few of these dog-pooh sticks, some festooned in bags.

As we skirted the heath, a bit of drizzle started.

The Pine walk passes between silver birch trees on one side and pine on the other.

Soon we were back at the car to head home for lunch... Just in time as the rain came down in earnest shortly after we left. The car parks were really busy, and there were plenty of young families about, but then it is half-term.

Not a long walk, but some nice fresh air and the ponies were lovely.
