Westleton Walk

Today we had a "Twixmas" walk from Westleton.

This was the invite from Joyce.

"Thursday December 28th. A chance to stretch your legs at 'Twixmas'. We will meet at The Crown Pub, Westleton (IP17 3AD) for drinks at 10am and use of the facilities. We will start walking at approx 10.30am. Pls park on the local roads in Westleton. The 10 mile circular walk takes in forest paths, Dunwich village (toilets here but no café) and after 6.5 miles we will have a pit stop at The National Trust. If there is room inside their café, then please enjoy a cuppa or use the outside benches for lunch if the weather is kind. Pls come prepared for some last minute diversions as I know that the marsh land around Westleton/Minsmere is rather saturated and we may need to be reactive. Lifts from Bury might be available (do get in touch) and I will be travelling through Diss if anyone would like a lift en route."

A total of 9 of us, including Patrick and Caroline, who were walking with us for the first time, assembled at The Crown for coffee and we set off about 10:40. This was our route. We went in a clockwise direction.

Here are a few of my photos.

Our starting point.

Getting ready to go.

We were soon on Westleton Heath.

We saw plenty of birch trees today.

An interesting stump.

We had a little muddy stretch.

We took a bypass round some of it through a field exiting via this gate....

...although maybe we shouldn't have.

We were soon in Dunwich.

Glen took a phot of the village sign as the last one he took didn't come out.

The sea was surprisingly calm given the stormy conditions further north.

The boat is still there on the beach.

Sizewell power station in the distance.

We followed the cliff edge path.

Were we all 2 metres from the edge in the group photograph at the top of this post?

We've passed this nice white gate before too. Has it been repainted?

Now we were on Dunwich Heath.

Our lunch stop was at the coastguard cottages.

We went down to the creek and followed the path along the bottom....

...passing 7 reindeer on the way. This is Rudolph. WSe didn't see Comet or Vixen, though.

When we climbed out of the woods up to Vault Hill we got a view of Sizewell B power station again.

We returned to Westleton  via the path we had tried for the first time on our previous walk from Eastbridge in September, but in the opposite direction.

We were soon entering Westleton village once more.

A great walk with hardly any mud and we didn't get wet. Thank-you Joyce for organising and leading us round and thank-you everyone else too for the company.
