Don't know if I've ever seen or used BEGIRD but I'd heard of GIRD so I was relieved to solve that anagram.Similarly I knew bash so PASH could reasonably be the same meaning. I enjoyed SADDLEBAG but wonder if unpleasant woman=BAG will garner you some criticism! Knew UMBO from other puzzles. I wasn't sure at first if GODDAM as accursed worked but thinking it over I see it does. Many clever clues- thanks very much for enjoyable workout!
ReplyDeleteA very smooth puzzle, 9 minutes for me. Only Umbo not known but with the checkers and a clear "inclusion clue" hint it was possible to guess it. Begird the other slight hold-up; like Curryowen I don't think I have ever seen it used in anger (or indeed in any other frame of mind for that matter), but with three checkers there were only a very limited number of anagram words it could be.
ReplyDeleteI am presuming this may be the last Saturday Special of 2022 (unless we have a treat lined up for 30 December) so may I wish our three valiant setters a very happy Christmas and say Thank you very much for the puzzles you have given us this year. More than two dozen between you, and not a single dud among them.
Cedric
Thanks Cedric (and all of the solvers) for your kind words and support. I have finished the next one so it will be road tested by the team next week.
DeleteWe echo the thanks.. always enjoy them. And seasons greetings to all.
DeleteThought this was on the more difficult side.
ReplyDeleteDidn’t know 9ac “Umbo” and wasn’t too familiar with 14ac “Begird” either (although both were obtainable).
Pash for crush? One for me to look up I think - luckily I knew the Turkish officer anyway. Took longer than it should to get “Hunts”, and it took all my willpower not to stick in Hants (which isn’t even an old country).
Other than, enjoyable as usual. Thanks Phil
JamesEd46
Thank you Phil for a very enjoyable puzzle. I have to admit you beat me in the top left hand corner with 1ac, 2D and 3D but I solved all the other clues and parsed most. Never heard of Collected for Prayers but guessed it anyway.
ReplyDeleteBEGIRDED made me smile.
I thought BLONDE and GREEN were particularly clever and satisfying clues.
A Merry Christmas to you and the other setters and thanks for the very welcome extra quick cryptic
IanV.
Thanks for a gentle solve over a warming cuppa after working outside in the cold for a tad too long! NHO 9a UMBO but it was easily gettable. Also held up a bit by 14a BEGIRD but saw no other solution and it felt ok. No problems with the Turkish Officer (one of my maternal grandfathers was Chief Apothecary during the Crimean War and was awarded this rank by way of thanks for curing the Turkish leader of some ailment). A number of very nice clues. Don't have a Google Account so signing off as Andrew Turner per TFTF.
ReplyDeleteThanks to everyone for their feedback. It's good to know that the effort we three put in is worthwhile to those who solve our puzzles. Best wishes for the festive season to you all, and let's hope 2023 is better than this year - it won't need to try too hard ! I'll be back with my next offering on January 27th.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much -it’s great to have something to fill the weekend’s Quick Cryptic gap!
ReplyDeleteFirst one of these I’ve done. Had to copy it into Word and then print. Is there a better way? I’m only 57 but getting cataracts in 2 weeks so that may sort. DNF Didn’t get Blonde but I know the film. Those under 57 may not. Very grateful to all of you for doing these extras. Johnny H
