Thanks John. Liked SACK TEA SET and AS WELL in particular. Must confess to thinking OSLO was a mistake until I realised it was a reverse hidden. HNY!
ReplyDeleteSorry this is Dvynys
ReplyDeletePs Didn’t time myself but probably nearer 10 minutes than 8
ReplyDeleteThanks Dvynys, HNY to you as well
ReplyDeleteWind up for TEASE and on top for AS WELL were slow for me to see. I really liked SELF ASSEMBLY, also SIDESHOW and GLASS EYE. Disgusted with myself for not seeing tackle= SACK even though I waste a lot of time Sundays watching American football. Thanks for stimulating workout- looking forward to more in 2023!
ReplyDeleteThank you and Happy New Year (SACK and AS WELL were my favourite clues but ... who knows?)
DeleteDNF, but no complaints. Maybe I'm a bit crossworded out after yet another Cryptic Jumbo. Not to self, do the Saturday Special first.
ReplyDeleteMain miss was RECREATIONAL which would have helped with the final few clues.
Very much liked TEASET. And though OSLO must have been SO reversed followed by LO. Some great clues, here. Including the Whimsical SELF-ASSEMBLY, which is a Reverse Cryptic + Semi & Lit (or some other rare Beast)
Happy New Year to all.
Thanks and Happy New Year. TEASET was a very tempting clue to set ...
DeleteStruggled with this one more than with any other Saturday Special ever, for a 21 minute DNF - I had Get Set not Tea Set (Get set as in wind up, but I confess the rest not really parsed). Several others biffed but not parsed - Oslo (not sure I've seen the construction "every other letter, then reverse it" before), Sack (I got the fire but NHO the US tackle reference), Glass Eye (did not follow the reference to orbit as DK the medical term).
ReplyDeleteLOI Extreme as I took time to connect "old poplar" with "ex tree" - planks of wood would be an ex tree, but not sure about old = ex. I am an old man (so my children tell me all the time) but I am not an ex man!
Above queries offset by some lovely clues; I was particularly pleased to get Self Assembly, and the two long anagrams were both very good and opened the grid nicely. But overall, this was a struggle and I think the toughest Saturday Special I can recall (and I am not aware of having missed one).
However this does not reduce my thanks to all three of our Saturday setters for their efforts over the year, or my best wishes to all for the New Year
Cedric
Thank you, not just for these comments but for your generous support on TfTT. I make a New Year promise to make things simpler in 2023 (I have no idea how I will do it ... but I promise to try)
ReplyDeleteThank you, all extra compilers, and a Happy New Year to you all!
ReplyDeleteSorry I can't comment as myself but once, many moons ago, I had a blogging site but now have no idea what the password was so it is stuck in limbo and I can't get into it, either to cancel or to amend.
When I come to comment on these excellent puzzles the site asks how I want to appear . It does show "anonymous" but there is a drop-down arrow you can click and among some other choices the option of URL or name appears and you can type in any name you want to be identified by. Anyways that's how I get to "curryowen" on my device so it might work for you too.
ReplyDeleteNot at my best today but had to work hard at this one! A DNF as had 4a Get Set rather than Tea Set. Lots of lovely clues elsewhere. HNY to all!
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew (and everyone). HNY.
ReplyDeleteNot my best effort, pretty difficult. DNF about 6, i.e. SUBORDINATES, RECREATIONAL, AS WELL, TEA SET, SOLDERS, SELF-ASSEMBLY. I might have done better if I’d been able to print out, but my printer has gone on strike, following the current fashion. I failed to recognise anagrists and was generally a bit dim.
ReplyDeleteBut thank you Sawbill and John, and happy New Year!
Countrywoman
Happy New Year to you.
DeleteHave to admit, I thought you’d made an error for 1dn, but now I see the American Football reference I see it’s a great clue.
ReplyDeleteLike a few above, I found this tricky, and I think it was one of the hardest ones for a while. Really liked 12dn “Glass Eye”, 14ac “Tea Set” and 17ac “Self Assembly”.
Thanks as usual and a happy new year to everyone!

I knew that it was at the difficult end … but also knew that it would be the Xmas holiday so solvers might have five minutes more. As I said above, SACK and AS WELL were my favourites to clue.
DeleteHappy New Year to you.
Managed 12/24. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteBeen saving this for a quiet day after all the activity at New Year. Thoroughly enjoyed the crossword although it was a dnf for me beaten by the same clues as others above. Some very clever and satisfying clues however. Thank you Sawbill, your efforts are much appreciated. IanV
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ian
